The Gryphon newspaper is Leeds University Union’s official student publication. One of the oldest societies on campus, it began its journey in 1897, and is now regarded as one of the most successful student newspapers in the country.
The likes of Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre, Observer food critic Jay Rayner, Guardian deputy national editor Polly Curtis and BBC Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell have passed through their office doors, and their latest editors have gone on to write for The Mirror, The Times and The Evening Standard.
The brief was to create a new identity for The Gryphon that would stay true to its historical roots whilst fuelling the rebrand and internal transformation the paper would be undergoing. Throughout the process, we found ourselves working closely and concentrating on two variations of the branding – that could differ between print and online services.
